Information needed for obtaining a marriage license in Putnam County, WV

Must be 18 years of age.

If under the age of 18 must have parental consent, and there is also a three day waiting period before the license can be issued.

The following information is needed to apply for a marriage license in Putnam County, WV;

Proper ID: Valid Drivers License or Certified Birth certificate

  • Parents place of birth
If either applicant has been married previously, the date that the previous marriage ended will be needed. (Date of death or divorce)

The marriage license is valid for 60 days. If the applicants have not married after the 60 days the license is void. If you wish to get married you will need to obtain a new license.

With Premarital Education:

By using this online application process, you will expedite your time at the county clerk's office. Please complete your application in its entirety and ensure that all of the information is accurate to the best of your knowledge. There are certain fields that are required in order to submit your application through this system. When you complete the application, you will be notified if any required fields are not fully completed.

In order to claim your marriage license after submitting an automated application, both the applicants must appear in person at the Putnam County Clerk's office. Once you have completed the required additional information (providing valid picture ID) a member of our staff will administer an oath to the applicants prior to obtaining the necessary signatures on the actual license.

You must come to the Clerk's office within 15 days of completing this online submission. After that time, we will no longer store this submission, and you will be required to re-input this data when you arrive at the Clerk's office. Once a marriage license has been issued, it is only valid for sixty (60) days. If the marriage does not occur within sixty (60) days of issuance of the license, a new license application must be submitted and additional fees paid.

  1. The National Healthy Marriage Resource Center;
     
  2. A church, spiritual assembly, or religious organization; or
     
  3. Other substantially similar resource

What proof is needed?

The premarital education provider shall furnish each participant, who completes the premarital education required by this section, a certificate of completion.
